Canada's Minister of Economy: The UK Should Collaborate with Canada in the New European Alliance

Canada's Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the UK should create a new European economic alliance together with Canada. In a statement to the BBC, he said, "We must act together to form the alliance of the future." Champagne pointed out that the world, especially America, is changing and expressed the need to adapt to these changes. Champagne also referred to the trade war between Canada and the US, stating that his country had to impose tariffs to protect its own industries. The proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a type of associated EU membership for Canada is seen as a historic step for the European Union. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to the European Union in Strasbourg aimed to lay the foundations for this new alliance. Minister Champagne emphasized that Canada and the UK share common values and that they need to explore a different form of cooperation in this context. "We are independent and sovereign countries, but we are stronger together," he stated. However, the extensive tariffs imposed by the US have raised questions about the UK's relations with Europe and its position with the US, leading to a search for a new balance after Brexit. Champagne noted that Canada's strong financial structure has increased the country's resilience in the face of tensions with the US and pointed out that it offers great opportunities for strengthening cooperation between Europe and Canada. Increasing mutual trade and strategic partnerships are particularly important for young people to evaluate educational and living opportunities in Europe. Champagne also added that Canada is seeking access to Europe's advanced technologies, in addition to its capacity to supply critical minerals and gas during this process.
