Bank of England Faces Tough Choices

The Bank of England plans to keep interest rates unchanged despite rising prices due to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East. The nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) met amid rising energy prices worldwide and a climate of increasing interest rates. Economists expect the MPC to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 3.75%. However, there are differing views among analysts on whether this rate will rise by the end of the year.

Interest rates play a critical role in determining borrowing and savings rates for individuals and businesses. The bank's latest interest rate decision will be announced on Thursday at 12:00 BST. In its meeting at the end of July, the MPC indicated that it could raise interest rates if the war in Iran escalates. Bank Governor Andrew Bailey had stated at that time, "If this conflict continues and oil prices keep exceeding $100, interest rates will need to rise further."

Oil prices surpassed $100 on September 9 and have remained at that level. There is little hope for a lasting ceasefire in the war in Iran. The central bank uses interest rates to keep inflation in check, targeting an inflation rate of 2%. However, according to official data released on Wednesday, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose to 3.1% in August, reaching its highest level in the last six months.

Rising energy costs are also expected to impact consumers' food and fuel prices. The MPC will adopt a cautious approach, considering that the European Central Bank raised interest rates to 2.5% for similar reasons. Similarly, the U.S. Federal Reserve has raised its interest rate to a range of 3.5-3.75%. However, MPC members must be cautious to avoid putting additional pressure on employers and narrowing employment opportunities.

The rise in markets and increasing interest rate expectations have led many major financial institutions to raise the costs of new fixed-rate mortgages. Andrew Montlake, CEO of mortgage broker Coreco, stated, "The inflation monster has not been completely eradicated yet." Montlake added, "If inflation becomes persistent, the financing costs for lenders will continue to rise," suggesting that borrowers should not worry but those nearing the end of their fixed-rate period should act early.
