The UK Government Must Create a Concrete Plan for British Steel
In the UK, British Steel was taken into public ownership in July. The government's spending watchdog highlighted the "shocking" costs of keeping this struggling steel producer afloat. British Steel was saved from closure in 2020 through government intervention, preventing the loss of 4,000 jobs. However, to date, the company's daily operating cost has reached £1.3 million, and the total cost of this situation is estimated to be £1.5 billion by 2028. The government attempted to stabilize the company by appointing a new team to manage British Steel. However, a statement from the public accounts committee noted that ministers have fallen short in presenting a concrete plan for a sustainable model for the business. The committee emphasized that the government has not made any cost estimates regarding the future of British Steel and that uncertainties about how long this will last continue. The government's use of public resources to support British Steel is reducing the resource needs for other sectors as well. The committee stated, "The money the government spends to support British Steel should not affect the needs of other sectors." Additionally, Jingye, the former owner of British Steel, has claimed that the company had a debt of £1 billion before it was nationalized and has sought compensation from the government. This situation could also strain relations between the UK and China. The Chinese government expressed that it is "deeply disturbed" by the developments regarding the nationalization of British Steel. It is stated that the government needs to create a clear future plan for British Steel, which should include a production model, financial sustainability, and expected costs.
