BT saves 900 jobs by acquiring TalkTalk for £400 million

BT announced that it has acquired the broadband provider TalkTalk for £400 million in a rescue deal. This move will help protect 900 jobs and allows for TalkTalk’s debt-free acquisition. The purchase will add 1.5 million additional broadband customers to BT’s existing customer base. However, this deal will require scrutiny by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to ensure competition is maintained.
Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy has issued a public interest intervention notice to assess the deal's impact on public health and critical national infrastructure. TalkTalk has over 250,000 vulnerable customers, many of whom rely on old copper network-connected devices that provide alerts in emergencies. In 2023, two vulnerable individuals lost their lives due to the failure of these devices. TalkTalk’s PlatformX Communications (PXC) division has approximately 1 million wholesale customers, including critical infrastructure providers such as health, emergency services, and government.
Virgin Media O2 reacted to the acquisition of TalkTalk, stating that it represents a "deal" that will weaken competition. The company expressed concerns that BT would increase its dominance in the market and emphasized that existing competition regulations should not be overlooked. BT’s market share is approximately 30%, while Openreach is TalkTalk’s largest supplier.
BT’s CEO Allison Kirkby emphasized that TalkTalk’s collapse poses significant risks for millions of people and businesses. Kirkby stated that their priorities are to ensure the stability of the business and provide assurance to households and businesses dependent on TalkTalk. Although she mentioned that they have not yet decided whether BT will maintain the TalkTalk brand, she stressed that existing customers do not need to make any changes.
As TalkTalk faces challenges in the competitive telecom market, it has reduced its retail customer base from 4 million in 2019 to 1.5 million as of 2023. The company’s founder, Charles Dunstone, transformed TalkTalk into a private company with a £1.1 billion deal with a London-based hedge fund in 2021, which resulted in the company being burdened with a total debt of £1.5 billion.
