Electric Vehicle Sales Targets Under Review Amid Pressure from Car Manufacturers

The UK is preparing to review its electric vehicle (EV) sales targets. This comes after pressure from car manufacturers on the government. According to current regulations, car manufacturers are required to ensure that a certain percentage of the vehicles they sell each year are zero-emission. The target was expected to increase to 80% by 2030. However, the government is considering the possibility of lowering this target to 50%, and the consultation process on this issue will continue until the end of October. Environmental groups warn that lowering the targets would harm the UK's long-term climate goals. The current policy, known as the ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicles) mandate, anticipates an increase in the percentage of electric vehicle sales each year. Starting at 22% in 2024, this percentage is expected to reach 33% in 2026 and 80% by 2030. The government's proposals provide car manufacturers with more flexibility in selling hybrid vehicles, while suggesting that if the sales of fully electric vehicles drop to 50%, the other 50% should be hybrids. It has been noted that similar targets have continuously changed in previous governments, causing uncertainty in the automotive industry. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson had promised to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. However, this ban was postponed to 2035 during Rishi Sunak's term. Representatives of the automotive industry argue that the targets need to be reassessed, stating that the demand for electric vehicles has not yet reached sufficient levels and that meeting the current targets is costly. Electric vehicle advocates criticize the government's move, warning that the changes will negatively impact climate goals. Experts estimate that reducing the electric vehicle sales target to 50% would result in 2.6 million fewer electric vehicles on the roads by 2035. While reassessing the targets, the government is trying to ensure that this process progresses in a balanced manner from both environmental and economic perspectives.
