Signs of Slowdown in the Chinese Economy Are Increasing

The Chinese economy continues to show signs of slowdown with the decline in industrial production and retail sales in July. This situation is increasing the pressure on the Beijing administration to intervene to support economic activities. The country's second quarter growth data exhibited one of the weakest performances in recent years, leading to concerns among investors and analysts.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), industrial production in July increased by only 4.5% compared to the previous year. This rate could not surpass the 5.3% growth in June and fell short of the Reuters survey estimate of 4.8%. Additionally, retail sales showed a low growth of 0.6%, compared to a 1% increase recorded in June. Experts evaluate this situation as a weaker performance than expected despite tourism spending during the summer holiday period.

NBS indicated that extreme weather conditions, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall negatively affected market supply and demand. However, these data are expected to increase the pressure on the government to accelerate tax and spending policies. Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated that efforts to boost external demand could be used to compensate for weak domestic demand. "Currently, domestic demand issues are clearly ongoing, and some sectors are facing challenges," said Li, emphasizing the importance of promoting a balanced development of foreign trade.

Analysts expect stronger growth rates in the later periods of the year. This expectation will be supported by measures the Beijing administration will take to increase economic activities. Julian Evans-Pritchard, head of China economics at Capital Economics, noted that investments in artificial intelligence continue to support industrial activities, while the weakness is partly attributed to temporary disruptions caused by recent typhoons. A modest growth increase is expected for the remainder of the year, along with fiscal easing.
