Channel 4 is Entering Its Largest Layoff Process in History

Channel 4 is entering its largest layoff process in its 43-year history. Approximately 25% of the total 1,276 employees are planned to be laid off. This decision emerges as part of efforts to reduce costs due to a decline in advertising revenues. The company's new CEO, Priya Dogra, announced on Wednesday that a comprehensive evaluation of Channel 4's strategy and structure would be conducted. In recent years, with an increasing workforce, Channel 4's employee count had reached 1,276 by 2025. However, the number of layoffs is estimated to be between 300 and 325. Two years ago, under the leadership of former CEO Alex Mahon, 200 layoffs were recorded as the largest cut at that time. Channel 4's salary budget has also significantly increased over the past two years, reaching £122 million. Employees express that the upcoming cuts will be severe, and London is said to be an important focal point in this process. Last year, Channel 4 promised to increase the number of employees in the country and regions. The company has 255 full-time employees in its commercial division, 423 in creative areas, 542 in operations, and 56 in the 4Talent division. Changes in content and ordering processes are also expected from Dogra. Last year, Channel 4 utilized a program budget of £640 million, spending £480 million of it on British-made original content. It is known that Dogra aims to limit cuts to the content budget in line with the goal of finding fewer but better-funded content. During this period, when the company is seeking innovative ways to reduce its dependency on digital platforms, efforts to cut costs are coming to the forefront. With the financial losses it has experienced in recent years, the channel is focusing on strategic changes to secure its future.
