Ministers Plan to Simplify Document Management for Small Businesses

In an effort to reduce the bureaucratic burden on small businesses in the United Kingdom, the Department for Business is preparing to take a significant step. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced that some paperwork requirements for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be completely eliminated and corporate reporting rules will be simplified.

The department stated that these changes could save businesses across the country £450 million annually. It emphasized that it is unreasonable for small businesses to deal with complex paperwork while they should focus on their daily trade. It particularly noted that businesses such as cafes, hotels, and furniture manufacturers face an unnecessary burden from overly detailed reporting.

The department pointed out that some businesses' annual reports can reach up to 98,000 words, and this number rises to an average of 152,000 words for FTSE 100 companies. Reynolds stated, “No one wants to fill out forms to start a business,” highlighting that many businesses miss growth opportunities due to unnecessary bureaucracy and costs.

Reynolds expressed that these steps will reduce long-standing bureaucracy and create a system suitable for the 21st-century economy. This will allow business owners to manage their operations more efficiently and focus on new employment and growth opportunities. Consultations regarding the plans will begin on September 7.
