The Federal Reserve Raised Interest Rates for the First Time Since 2023

The Federal Reserve has decided to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023 in its ongoing battle against inflation. According to the announced figures, the central bank increased the policy rate by a quarter point, raising it to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. This decision stands out as an important step taken under the leadership of the current Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh.

After the meeting, Warsh stated, "Inflation is very high and has been at these levels for a long time." It is noted that the interest rate hike, which was carried out for the first time since July 2023, should be closely monitored, especially in terms of economic growth and employment rates. Former President Donald Trump criticized the trade deficit by arguing that interest rates should be at 1% or lower.

In the last meeting, Fed officials predicted that there would be one more interest rate hike by the end of the year. Four officials estimate that interest rates will reach a range of 4.25% to 4.5% by the end of the year. Despite positive expectations regarding economic growth and unemployment rates, it is stated that reaching the inflation target of 2% could take until 2029.

Rising energy prices and geopolitical tensions have particularly caused Brent crude oil prices to rise in recent months. In the U.S., gasoline prices are on average 1 dollar more expensive than a year ago. This situation could increase borrowing costs, negatively impacting consumer and business loans.

High inflation rates are making the economic outlook bleak ahead of the elections in November. Various polls show that rising prices have eroded wage increases for the American public and that consumer confidence is rapidly declining. All these factors have led political parties to highlight concerns about the cost of living in their election campaigns, while voters are divided on which party is more successful in this regard.
