Uber to Cut 3,300 Jobs as Part of Management Restructuring

Uber has decided to eliminate approximately 10% of its global workforce, or 3,300 corporate positions. The company's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, stated that these changes aim to make business processes "simpler and faster." They are targeting to streamline the organizational structure by reducing management layers and merging teams.

While the San Francisco-based company did not disclose how many positions would be affected in which offices, notifications have been sent to the laid-off employees. However, it was noted that local processes need to be followed in some countries. Khosrowshahi expressed that the company has shown good growth over the last five years, but this growth has also brought complexity. He emphasized that more layers have led to more coordination and a more fragmented ownership structure.

Additionally, Uber is inviting the vast majority of its employees to work in the office. This will reinforce a hybrid work policy by reducing remote work to a minimum of 1%. Employees will be required to be in the office three days a week. It was reported that with organizational changes, operational and technology teams will be merged, and the number of "micro-teams" will be reduced by 50%.

Khosrowshahi stated that the decisions they made were difficult but would help them build a stronger Uber in the future. The company is also preparing to launch autonomous taxis on UK roads and plans to make significant investments in this area. Uber aims to invest $10 billion in its own autonomous vehicle business and has acquired Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion to achieve significant growth in the delivery market. Thus, the UberEats service will compete in a stronger competitive environment against rival applications like DoorDash.
