Competitive Recruitment Processes: An Opportunity or a Challenge for Young People?

In recent years, innovative methods have started to emerge in the business world to attract young talents. One of these methods is transforming recruitment processes into competitions. Especially large brands organize such events to increase youth participation. For example, L'Oréal's Brandstorm competition provides a platform for young people to present their business ideas, creating potential job opportunities for successful participants in the process.

As part of this competition, Yumi Liberman presented her business idea on stage at the final held in London in 2024. Yumi expressed that this experience reminded her of competitive sports while also providing her with the opportunity to get into the flow. At the end of the competition, they became the UK champions as a team and participated in the international final. Yumi, who achieved third place here, managed to secure a position as a marketing management intern at L'Oréal.

However, these types of competitive recruitment processes also bring some criticisms. Melissa Alcruz, who previously worked at MTV and competed for promotions in a similar competitive environment, expresses the challenges of such processes. Alcruz emphasized that dealing with additional projects while already working a full-time job can be quite demanding. Katrina Collier, a former recruitment consultant, is concerned that such processes may lead to economic discrimination. It may not be possible for every candidate to spend months of time for a chance to find a perfect job.

It is clear that competitive recruitment processes have both advantages and disadvantages. Jamie Kohn from Gartner notes that these methods make it easier for employers to evaluate candidates, but emphasizes that attention should be paid to how candidates' time is spent. Psychologist Amanda Potter argues that such events may highlight more extroverted personalities and disadvantage quieter personality types.

In conclusion, competitive recruitment processes can offer opportunities while also creating serious challenges for young people. While for some, like Yumi Liberman, these processes can open doors to careers, for others, they can become a stressful and demanding experience. In the business world, how effectively these innovative methods can be applied and whether they can provide fair opportunities for all candidates seems to be an important topic of discussion in the upcoming period.
