London's Investment Bankers and Lawyers Earned Over £1 Billion in Acquisition Frenzy
Investment bankers and lawyers in London earned over £1 billion thanks to the intense acquisition activity in 2026. This year, the value of merger and acquisition transactions involving UK stock market-listed companies increased by 175%, reaching approximately £100 billion. The interest of foreign buyers in British companies is among the main reasons for this increase. Official documents show that the total fees paid to investment bankers, lawyers, and accountants involved in these operations exceeded £1.2 billion. This growth was driven by a significant cash flow from private equity funds and the influence of American buyers targeting undervalued British companies. However, this situation raises concerns about the future of the London stock market. JP Morgan became the bank that provided the most acquisition advisory services related to UK companies this year, achieving a turnover of £67.6 billion with 14 deals. Additionally, the law firm Slaughter and May also became a leader in this field. In recent years, bonuses at banks in the UK have also increased significantly. The government lifted the cap on bonuses, which was twice the annual salary, at the end of 2023. This allowed large investment banks to increase bonuses up to 25 times, depending on their performance. However, these high earnings have become a significant issue for many households due to the impact of the cost of living crisis. GMB union general secretary Charlotte Brumpton-Childs pointed out that the large sums paid to financial intermediaries are making life difficult for those carrying the economic burden of the country. Additionally, Paul Nowak, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, called for an additional tax on bank profits. He argued that, with many families across the country facing declining living standards and rising energy prices, banks should pay more tax in response to this situation. Despite all these developments, the rate at which companies are joining the London stock market continues to decline, which is seen as an indication that investment banks may face revenue losses in the future.
