The Non-Approval of New Oil and Gas Fields Could Render the United Kingdom 'Uninvestable'

Norwegian energy company Equinor announced that it may reconsider its investment plans in the region if new oil and gas fields in the United Kingdom are not approved. The company's CEO, Anders Opedal, expressed that this situation raises the question of whether the United Kingdom will be investable in the future. Currently, final approval for the Rosebank and Jackdaw projects is awaited, but this process has faced delays due to environmental concerns.
The UK government is projected to see a halving of oil and gas production by 2035, amid growing concerns about energy security. Currently, the United Kingdom meets half of its gas needs from Norway, and the Norwegian government continues to issue new exploration licenses. Opedal emphasized that the UK has the potential to produce more of its own oil and gas, stating that this situation is entirely a political choice.
Rosebank stands out as the largest undiscovered oil and gas field in the United Kingdom, believed to hold approximately 500 million barrels of oil and gas reserves. The exploration license for the project was granted 25 years ago, and the final investment decision will be made in 2023. Although both projects were initially approved by the former Conservative government, they have faced legal challenges due to objections from environmental groups.
Equinor, advocating for new drilling, stated that there are uncertainties regarding the future of the government's energy policies, which could negatively impact investment decisions. However, environmental organizations argue that new drilling will only increase corporate profits and will not provide economic benefits for the United Kingdom. The government emphasized that the North Sea is an important national asset and that oil and gas will continue to play a significant role in the energy system.
