Global Bond Sales Gain Momentum: US-Iran Tensions Raise Inflation Fears

In global markets, investors have accelerated bond sales recently due to inflation concerns and rising budget deficits. Especially in the United Kingdom, the yield on 10-year government bonds, known as gilts, has reached its highest level since 2008, rising to 5.3%. This situation poses additional challenges for Finance Minister John Healey, who is preparing a new budget, by increasing the government's borrowing costs.

The resumption of conflicts between the US and Iran has heightened global inflation fears, driving up oil prices and fueling expectations that central banks will raise interest rates in the coming months. Analysts indicate that these developments have negatively impacted Healey's financial targets and nearly halved the maneuvering space against the budget deficit.

Deutsche Bank economists predict that the £26 billion maneuvering space created by this year's spring forecasts could drop to £14 billion in the budget announcement on October 28. In this case, Healey will have to resort to either tax increases or spending cuts, and he will also face pressure to finance rising defense expenditures.

Market analysts emphasize that while governments worldwide are affected by pressures in the bond markets, the United Kingdom is experiencing greater difficulties due to high debt levels and rising borrowing costs. Additionally, escalating tensions in the Middle East have pushed the price of Brent crude oil to around $95 per barrel. This situation is causing investors to be anxious due to uncertainties in the markets.
