Air Traffic Issue Could Have Been Prevented, Transport Minister Stated

The air traffic control system in the United Kingdom caused a major chaos by leading to the cancellation of over 2,000 flights due to a technical malfunction. Transport Minister Heidi Alexander stated that this situation could have been prevented and ordered an independent investigation. It was noted that the malfunction occurred in the system operated by Nats and caused interruptions lasting four hours.
After her meeting with Nats CEO Martin Rolfe, Alexander stated that the possibility of a cyber attack was off the table, but the issue experienced was not inevitable. Nats apologized for its third major technical malfunction in the last three years. Alexander emphasized that the 49% stake of the government in Nats raised serious questions about the system's resilience.
While airlines complained about the lack of financial consequences for such malfunctions, Airlines UK's CEO Tim Alderslade expressed that the consequences of the mistakes were placed on the airlines. The Transport Minister also requested an independent review from the Civil Aviation Authority and stated that she expected an update within six months.
The Ministry of Transport reported that the likelihood of passengers receiving compensation after this issue at Nats is low. Nats stated that the malfunction occurred recently and that this situation would be considered under "extraordinary circumstances," indicating that passengers' rights to claim compensation are limited. The issues experienced jeopardize the flow of air traffic and create a situation that negatively affects passengers.
