Court Proceedings Started for the Viral Potato Shop in Amsterdam

A potato shop named Fabel Friet, located in one of Amsterdam's most prestigious neighborhoods, has drawn the ire of local residents due to its popularity gained through TikTok. Locals argue that the long queues forming in front of the shop not only fill the streets but also lead to pollution in the area. This situation prompted local residents to apply to the court for the revocation of the shop's operating license. The court evaluated the crowding on Runstraat street, where Fabel Friet is located, and its effects on the environment. During the hearing in the courtroom, local resident Thomas van Leeuwen stated, "This shop has polluted the area. Eating on the street is quite an embarrassing behavior. Pollution comes right to our doorstep." The shop's popularity, especially due to its fries served with parmesan cheese and truffle mayonnaise, is said to be a primary reason for the problem, along with the shop's small size. Neighbour Niek van der Heijden demanded that the shop be moved to a larger area, stating, "TikTok queues are causing a significant disturbance in the area." Amsterdam city officials stated that while evaluating Fabel Friet's license application, the environmental impacts of the business would also be taken into account. Shop owners Abel Klatser and Floris Feilzer announced that they receive cleaning services four times a day for environmental cleanliness and that the number of visitors has decreased by 23% this year. However, their lawyer, stating that this situation is not sufficient for local residents, said, "It might be a bit crowded, but we are managing it." The court will make a decision about the future of Fabel Friet on November 12. While the shop owners indicate that their efforts to be a good neighbor have been overlooked, some neighbors express that the crowd and pollution caused by the influence of social media have become unbearable. Considering the economic contributions of tourism to the city, discussions about the existence of businesses like Fabel Friet are also increasing. As a result, this case questions not only the future of a business but also how public spaces in the city are utilized.
