Are Interest Rates Rising Again?
Recently rising energy prices and borrowing costs have brought up the question of whether interest rates will rise again. Especially the increase in oil prices negatively affects household budgets, while the economic impacts of the US-Iran tension threaten living standards. The European Central Bank raised interest rates to 2.5% by stating that inflation will remain above the 2% target. Other central banks are also preparing to take similar steps; especially in the US and the UK, interest rate decisions will be announced next week. The US Federal Reserve (Fed) has kept interest rates stable between 3.5% and 3.75% for five meetings, with the last change made in December. However, strong employment data and President Donald Trump's statements that oil prices will not fall have increased expectations for an interest rate hike on Wall Street this month. Although the new Fed chairman Kevin Warsh did not express a definitive view on interest rates, he emphasized that efforts to control price increases will continue. Economists state that the interest rate hike is a likely policy outcome in line with Warsh's statements. On the other hand, it is observed that rising oil and natural gas prices have ignited inflation concerns. Restrictions on energy shipments worldwide due to conflicts in the Middle East have raised the price of Brent crude oil to about $105. The increase in energy costs directly affects housing and business expenses, as well as raising transportation costs, leading to price increases reflected in food and other essential goods. Central banks are trying to limit price increases with high interest rates; however, this situation also brings the risk of slowing consumer spending. In the UK, energy costs are expected to reach their highest level in three years as winter approaches. The inflation rate is hovering around 2.9% and is expected to increase in the coming months. However, the Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates stable at 3.75% because there are no signs that the second-round effects of price increases are reflecting on the economy. Economists express that the weakening of the labor market reduces workers' power to demand wage increases, evaluating the current situation. It is observed that the economic environment is weaker compared to 2022, and companies are reported to be more cautious in hiring.
