New battery-powered trains will provide faster journeys in the north
The UK Government has announced the construction of a new fleet of battery-powered trains that will provide faster and more reliable journeys in the northern regions. As part of this, 29 new trains to be produced at Alstom's facility in Derby in 2028 will be operated by TransPennine Express. This project will create 350 jobs locally and approximately 6,000 job opportunities nationwide. The new trains will feature the Adessia Stream model and will go down in history as the first battery-powered trains to be used on long-distance mainline services in 2034. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as someone who frequently travels between London and Manchester, emphasized the importance of reliable and efficient transport services. It is stated that the new trains will shorten journey times between major cities in the north and increase capacity on railway networks by 30% over the next decade. Burnham stated in a related announcement, "I hear complaints about trains not arriving very often. This means lost jobs, appointments, and opportunities. Today, that changes. These 29 new trains will bring faster and more reliable journeys to the north, while also providing thousands of British job opportunities for the next generation." It is noted that the new trains will not only operate without emissions on non-electrified lines but will also offer a more accessible boarding experience and provide onboard wifi services to passengers. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described this development as a sign of the promise of better journeys for citizens by British Railways.
