Thames Water Plans to Reopen Desalination Plant

Thames Water plans to reactivate the desalination plant located in the east of London this year. However, the expected date for the plant to be operational will be by the end of the year, which means the current drought will have long passed. The company aims to increase the water levels in reservoirs during the winter months with the commissioning of the plant in Beckton at the end of the year. While many water companies are implementing hosepipe bans to alleviate drought conditions, Thames Water has provided only 7.2 billion liters of drinking water from this plant, which has been operational only five times in the last 15 years. This amount can only meet London's daily water demand for seven days. This plant, which has long been a subject of debate, was built to provide drinking water by desalinating seawater during periods of water scarcity. However, it has operated for very little time and its costs have reached 500 million pounds. As Thames Water serves 16 million customers, the status of the plant will also be closely examined by government officials. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to make an important decision regarding the future of Thames Water, one of the 13 companies allowed to raise water prices. The company states that operating this plant may not be financially attractive due to high electricity costs. Additionally, Thames Water's CEO Chris Weston expressed that the plant is facing serious issues and that engineers are making intense efforts to get the plant operational. The membranes that allow water to pass but block the passage of salt have reached the end of their lifespan in recent years. The lack of a facility to test new membranes further complicates this situation. MPs in Westminster are disappointed that the plant has not been operational during heatwaves, while it is thought that the plant may be more profitable to operate under cooler weather conditions.
