OpenAI CEO: The World's Fear of AI is Justified, But We Must Trust
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed that despite the growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI), people need to trust technology companies. Speaking at a conference in San Francisco, Altman said, "I believe the world needs to trust that we will do the right thing." However, he also acknowledged that the rapid development of AI has justified the public's fears.
Altman emphasized that the potential risks of AI technologies are becoming increasingly apparent, stating, "It's not that hard to imagine that this situation could go wrong." These discussions in the field of AI have been further fueled by claims from a researcher who left the company Anthropic, suggesting that uncontrolled AI could threaten humanity. Following these statements, AI leaders responded by calling for more self-regulation, addressing the pressures from governments to regulate the industry.
Alongside Altman at the conference were other key figures such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia's president Jensen Huang. Zuckerberg noted that each AI lab should take its own initiative to develop safe AI tools, while Huang argued that AI companies should decide whether to release their technology versions. Huang stated that there is no need for external intervention, saying, "Safety is an engineering issue."
On the other hand, some industry experts express that leaving AI in a completely unregulated area poses significant risks. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark indicated that this situation is dangerous, while Logical Intelligence COO Patrick Hillman stated that trust in technology companies is low. Hillman pointed out that "the only institution that could fall below Americans' trust in Washington might be Silicon Valley," highlighting this trust crisis.
As a result, the AI industry has initiated a dialogue about security standards and regulations within itself. Altman emphasized that the entire sector must work together to develop AI technologies safely for society.
