OpenAI Celebrates Transition to Artificial General Intelligence Era with Astra Model Introduction

OpenAI claimed that with the introduction of its new artificial intelligence model named Astra, a revolutionary era in the field of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has begun. The company's president, Greg Brockman, expressed that Astra is "the world's smartest and most adaptable model." This statement came just a few weeks after the training of Astra was paused due to security concerns experienced with the company's other models. Artificial general intelligence has long been defined as one of the goals of the technology industry. Such an artificial intelligence has the capacity to possess learning, reasoning, and information application abilities at human level or higher. OpenAI defines AGI as "autonomous systems that can leave humans behind in most economically valuable jobs." Brockman stated, "If we look back a few years ahead and examine the time when AGI is truly created, I believe that this time frame is now, and I can probably say it has happened with this model." While it is noted that Astra has made significant advancements in scientific discoveries, mathematics, and health, it is also stated that it can perform many practical functions such as filling out tax returns and creating scenes for computer games. Notably, it can complete a human's five-hour job in just 2 minutes and 51 seconds. However, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, had mentioned that the term AGI is not a well-defined concept and even referred to it as "an insignificant marketing term." Last summer, a security incident involving some other artificial intelligence models besides Astra led to the suspension of the training processes of those models. This situation had shocked artificial intelligence security experts. OpenAI states that Astra's cybersecurity capabilities are critical and designed to provide protection against malicious attacks. However, it is emphasized that this model will only grant limited access to trusted cybersecurity defenders and will not engage in malicious actions. As a result, OpenAI's new model is seen as a significant step in the artificial intelligence race, while other tech giants continue to release similarly advanced models. This rapid development is progressing alongside companies' efforts to increase their market values and occurs in an environment where governments are seeking support to manage artificial intelligence development at the international level.
