OpenAI Will Not Go Public in 2026

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced that the company will not go public in 2026. Altman stated that the security concerns related to artificial intelligence are quite serious, expressing that going public at such a time would not be wise. In an interview with Fortune magazine, he said, "Given the developments in security issues, now is not the right time to go public. We do not feel any pressure regarding this matter." Recently, as concerns about the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have increased, some researchers have warned that this technology could pose serious threats to the future of humanity. Notably, two researchers from OpenAI's competitor Anthropic made statements suggesting that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of the human race. This situation has prompted many politicians in the U.S. to call for new regulations. While emphasizing that 2026 is definitely not on the agenda, Altman noted that they need to work more on security and compliance issues. He also mentioned that OpenAI and other leading artificial intelligence companies might be close to reaching an agreement to slow down AI development and address security risks. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, called for slowing down the pace of AI model capabilities development, a sentiment that Altman also supported. On the other hand, Anthropic's plans to go public do not seem to be affected by security concerns. The company is expected to start promotional activities in mid-October to go public before the U.S. midterm elections in November.
