Meta Initiates Legal Battle Against UK Media Regulator

Meta announced that it has launched a new legal battle against the UK media regulator Ofcom. This move comes amid allegations that social media companies are using the courts to slow down the implementation of the Online Safety Act. Lawyers for Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have filed an appeal that includes subjecting platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram to additional obligations.

These additional obligations include increased transparency, enhanced user controls, measures against fraud, and greater recording of illegal content. Meta's legal move is seen as part of the discomfort experienced by US-based tech companies regarding the fees and penalties imposed by Ofcom under its digital security law.

In a previous case, Meta argued that Ofcom's fee calculation method was flawed and should not be based on global revenue. Violations of the Online Safety Act can result in penalties of up to 10% of the company's qualified global revenue or £18 million; whichever is higher is applied.

In addition to Meta, other social media platforms like TikTok and X have also initiated legal proceedings against Ofcom. Ofcom director Oliver Griffiths stated that they are facing high risks in this process and are working to resolve legal issues. Griffiths said, "It is normal for such appeals to occur to ensure that a new regulatory system is established, clarifying processes, scope, and enforcement."

Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that the government intends to continuously update laws to regulate the internet. She mentioned that they would adopt a more interventionist approach to rapidly changing technology.
