Global Bond Sales Restart as Rising Oil Prices Trigger Inflation Fears
Recently, with the increase in tensions in the Middle East, oil prices have risen, bringing inflation fears worldwide. On Wednesday, crude oil prices surged by 6% to exceed $107 due to concerns over potential disruptions in Saudi Arabia's oil exports as Houthi rebels advance along the Red Sea coast of Yemen. These developments have led investors to offload government bonds, raising borrowing costs. Inflation concerns, combined with uncontrolled borrowing processes by governments, have resulted in a significant wave of selling in the bond markets. Rising oil prices, especially with the potential resumption of the Iran war, are expected to increase inflation. This situation raises the likelihood of central banks increasing interest rates, negatively impacting economic growth. The European Central Bank raised its main interest rate to 2.5%, indicating that inflation will last longer than expected. In the United Kingdom, the yield on 10-year government bonds has risen to 5.37%, reaching its highest level since 2007. This poses a serious problem for the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey. Healey has committed to ensuring control over government borrowing and reducing long-term pressures on public finances. Additionally, rising energy costs are expected to put pressure on the government and increase the need to assist consumers during the winter months. The situation is not different in the United States. Former President Trump promised to give every citizen a $5,000 check if Republicans win the Midterm elections. However, due to bond sales, the 10-year borrowing interest rate has risen to 4.92%. While long-term borrowing costs are also increasing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has attempted to intervene directly in the markets to correct the situation. However, investors' reaction to this intervention has deepened the wave of selling. In the coming days, employment, inflation, and growth data to be released in the United Kingdom will provide more information on how the country has resisted the effects of the Iran war. Despite recording the strongest growth among G7 countries in the first half, rising oil prices and unexpected interest rate hikes continue to exert pressure on the economy.
