Management Change at John Lewis: Peter Ruis Steps Down

Peter Ruis, CEO of John Lewis, announced his resignation at a significant turning point in the management of the UK's largest department store chain. Ruis stated that he was leaving the company on a stronger foundation, while it is suggested that personal reasons may also lie behind his departure. Under Ruis's leadership, John Lewis had taken various steps, particularly in renewing its large stores and increasing sales.
Ruis's resignation came at a time when the retail sector was experiencing turmoil. The extreme heat during the summer made it difficult for traditional stores to compete with online commerce, while high living costs forced consumers to postpone major expenditures. Following Ruis's departure, John Lewis appointed Will Kernan as the new CEO. Kernan, who has previously worked with brands like River Island and The White Company, is expected to develop new strategies.
It was noted that during Ruis's tenure at John Lewis, he significantly increased sales by reinforcing the principle of "never knowingly selling at a low price." Additionally, he enhanced the brand's visibility through store renovations and new partnerships. However, some analysts suggest that differing views regarding John Lewis's strategic direction may have influenced Ruis's departure. In particular, it has been noted that there were disagreements between Ruis and John Lewis's new chairman, Jason Tarry, regarding investment issues.
Retail analysts express that John Lewis may consider closing more stores following Ruis's departure. The company had closed 16 stores during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising the necessity for further space reductions. With Ruis handing over his duties, there is great anticipation regarding the strategy John Lewis will adopt in the future.
