UK Air Traffic Control Failure Affects Hundreds of Thousands of Passengers
A failure in the air traffic control system in the UK has led to significant chaos, negatively affecting the travel plans of hundreds of thousands of passengers. The issue, which began on Tuesday afternoon, caused over 1,000 flight cancellations by impacting departures at the country's largest airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Stansted. According to flight tracking service Flightradar24, 177 flights were reported canceled for Wednesday.
The air traffic control service provider NATS stated that the technical issue required a complex recovery process and negatively affected the entire air traffic network. After an interruption lasting about four hours, it was reported that the flight processing system was corrected, but most flights had to wait for departure. While airports faced a series of flight cancellations and delays, British Airways announced that the effects would continue until Wednesday and offered passengers the option of free rebooking.
This situation faced by passengers was not limited to the UK, as its effects were also felt across Europe. Ryanair reported that over 65,000 passengers were delayed and 50 flights were canceled. Eurocontrol announced that some flights had to be held at airports abroad. Heathrow Airport announced that departures resumed in the evening, but arrivals were suspended throughout the night.
NATS stated that the failure experienced was not the same as the major disruptions in 2023 and 2025 and expressed that they were working in cooperation with airlines to resolve the issue. NATS CEO Martin Rolfe apologized for the disruption, arguing that such incidents are rare. However, airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air called for fundamental reforms, stating that NATS's system was ineffective.
The halt of flights had a serious impact on air traffic services in the UK. It was emphasized that measures should be taken to address the grievances of passengers and strengthen the air traffic control system.
