UK Economy Unexpectedly Grows by 0.4% in July

The UK economy unexpectedly grew by 0.4% in July, drawing attention. This increase occurred as the rapid development of artificial intelligence in the services sector overshadowed the negative effects of the Iran war. According to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the growth rate, which was 0.3% the previous month, rose to 0.4% in July. Economists stated that this growth was unexpected and that they did not foresee any growth. The statement emphasized that the growth in July was supported by a 0.4% increase in the services sector. Significant progress was recorded particularly in areas such as administrative services and computer programming and consultancy. ONS noted that businesses reporting the highest turnover in July 2026 were focused on activities related to artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Martin Beck, chief economist at WPI Strategy, said, "At a time when traditional sectors are in a period of stagnation, the UK needs more productivity-enhancing spending." Barret Kupelian, chief economist at PWC, expressed that the impact of artificial intelligence on the UK economy continues and that sectors related to AI, such as professional services, information technology, and administrative services, have recorded strong growth. It was reported that industrial production also increased by 0.2% for July, with the increase in manufacturing output balancing the decline in mining and energy sectors. This performance of the economy is seen as a positive development for Treasury Secretary John Healey. Healey welcomed the economy's strength ahead of his first budget to be held on October 28. However, experts indicate that the long-term outlook for the economy is more pessimistic. Warnings are being made that rising oil prices could increase inflation and raise government borrowing costs. This situation could complicate Healey's budget plans and lead to tax increases or spending cuts.
