Solution to Youth Unemployment Crisis in the UK: Widespread Support for Internships

Alan Milburn, a former minister who leads the government review on youth and employment, stated that supported internships should be widely promoted for young people with special educational needs. He emphasized that such internships could be effective in reducing unemployment rates for young people facing challenges such as learning difficulties, autism, or mental health issues. Milburn expressed that supported internships present a significant opportunity for young people to find jobs and that these supports need to be increased. It is noted that only 5% of young people with special educational needs and disabilities transition to permanent jobs in the country, while those who complete the supported internship program have placement rates of up to 70%. According to government data, nearly 1 million young people aged 16 to 24 are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). This situation has been described by Milburn as a moral crisis, and it is predicted that if urgent action is not taken, the number of NEETs could rise to 1.25 million by the 2030s. Milburn pointed out that particularly young people with neurodevelopmental disorders or mental illnesses are unable to transition into the workforce, rendering them economically inactive. He stated that supported internships play a crucial role in enhancing these young people's job-finding abilities and argued that the system should be structured to offer such opportunities. Supported internship programs provide on-the-job experience and career coaching for young people aged 16-24, designed for individuals with education, health, and care plans. However, there are only 4,500 supported internships available in the UK, highlighting the inadequacy of capacity in this area. Milburn stated that these programs need to be expanded and did not provide clear information on how resources would be secured for this purpose. As a result, these proposals are expected to be presented to the government.
