Removal of 'Hidden Taxes' in Energy Bills Requested in the UK

A group of businesses, charities, and other organizations signed a letter calling for the removal of "hidden taxes" in energy bills in the UK. The letter states that the country has the highest energy costs among developed nations. Major organizations such as Energy UK, CBI, and Age UK are among the signatories. These groups argue that these taxes, which account for 10% of energy bills and finance various government policies, should be covered by the state budget. The letter predicts that removing these taxes could save average households £250 a year and reduce electricity costs for businesses by 20%. It points out that a significant portion of these taxes was shifted to the state budget by former Chancellor Rachel Reeves's regulations last year. Additionally, there are calls for the removal of old support programs for nuclear power plants, the warm homes discount scheme, and businesses generating their own energy. Ed Matthew, director of the think tank E3G, emphasized that "the UK is worsening the situation by increasing its energy costs through taxes on electricity," stating that plans to reduce the cost of living and revive industrialization should include the removal of these taxes. Energy consultancy Cornwall Insight predicts that energy prices could rise by 20% in the coming years. The government had pledged to reduce energy costs before the 2024 elections, committing to saving £300 a year by 2030. However, the high level of current costs is negatively affecting both households and businesses. Dhara Vyas, CEO of Energy UK, stated, "High electricity prices are challenging us all," expressing that the government needs to show seriousness in solving fuel poverty and the cost of living crisis by removing these taxes. Concerns were also raised that high energy costs lead to business closures and job losses.
