Software Error in Air Traffic Control Caused Travel Chaos
A malfunction in an air traffic control system disrupted air traffic in the UK earlier this month. The national air traffic service NATS explained that the issue occurred due to a bug in the software supporting airspace management that lasted for a "millisecond." This error caused the system to fail, resulting in the cancellation of over 2,000 flights, negatively impacting hundreds of thousands of passengers. Some passengers had to sleep on the ground at airports, while others were stranded abroad.
NATS CEO Martin Rolfe stated in an interview with the BBC that the software error was "very, very rare" and expressed that he was not considering resigning. Rolfe said, "There is a huge chaos when flights are disrupted. Our job is to ensure that such situations occur as infrequently as possible." Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that the disruption was "completely unacceptable," and Airlines UK decided to write to NATS immediately to seek compensation for the costs incurred.
This incident raised questions about the resilience of NATS systems. Some airlines questioned Rolfe's position, while passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the support provided by airlines. Additionally, it was noted that their chances of receiving compensation were low due to the regulatory body's classification of the situation as extraordinary circumstances.
The incident began at 10:00 AM on September 8. It was realized that the error was a serious problem two and a half hours later. The system began to be restarted at 15:15, and restrictions in UK airspace were lifted only at 19:30. Major airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Glasgow were also affected by this situation. Rolfe apologized for the incidents and reiterated that NATS is primarily responsible for ensuring air safety. NATS stated that they put great effort into testing such systems and that understanding such complex situations is difficult.
The Transport Secretary emphasized that the cause of the disruption must be urgently understood and announced that the Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation. It was noted that this was the third national air traffic incident in the last three years. In 2023, 700,000 passengers were affected due to a computer malfunction, and in 2025, a smaller NATS failure led to 150 cancellations. Airlines UK CEO Tim Alderslade stated that passengers were once again victimized and that airlines were trying to compensate for this negative situation.
