UK Long-Term Borrowing Costs Reach Highest Level Since 1998

Long-term government borrowing costs in the UK have risen to their highest level in 28 years, putting additional pressure on Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The yield on 30-year bonds rose to 5.89% on Tuesday, marking the highest level since 1998. Similar high borrowing costs have also been recorded in the US, Japan, and Europe. This situation reflects investors' concerns about inflation, government debt levels, and the spending of major technology companies in the field of artificial intelligence. In a speech in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Burnham emphasized that the "cornerstone" of his government would be "fiscal responsibility" to address the cost of living crisis. However, these high borrowing costs will limit the government's flexibility against its own fiscal targets, reducing the amount available for consumer-friendly measures. Burnham stated that in a time of tightening public finances, he would make "more significant changes" to alleviate living costs. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of living in the past, arguing that the government's theory that increased spending would boost economic growth is flawed. The government's fiscal rules and constraints will remain in place to provide clarity for borrowing in the markets. However, high borrowing costs could negatively impact the economy by increasing borrowing costs for businesses and households. Additionally, in parallel with the rise in 30-year bond yields, the yield on 10-year bonds has also risen to 5.22%, reaching its highest level since the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008. The increase in government spending and global borrowing demands raises concerns about how markets will react to this situation. Prime Minister Burnham is expected to prioritize new measures to alleviate living costs in his budget on October 28.
