Stock Up on Food for Extreme Weather Preparedness

A government official stated that households need to stock up on food in preparation for the strongest El Niño event occurring in the Pacific Ocean. Environment Secretary Angela Eagle expressed that this natural climate event will lead to more extreme storms across the country.

According to a report published by the National Audit Office (NAO), the UK's food supply chain is at risk due to increasing threats from cyber attacks and the climate crisis. The report emphasized that the government is overly reliant on the private sector to address disruptions in food supply.

Secretary Eagle said, "We are likely to experience the largest El Niño seen to date. This will bring drier summers and wetter winters along with extreme storms. Therefore, we must be prepared." She also noted that stocking up on food is vital in emergencies.

The NAO report revealed that the UK's food supply chain is vulnerable to risks such as plant or human diseases, cyber attacks, and extreme weather conditions. It was emphasized that the government needs to take more steps in emergency preparedness compared to European countries.

Phil Pluck, CEO of the Food Supply Chain Federation, stated that there could be serious issues in the UK's food supply system and that caution is needed against cyber attacks. Pluck highlighted that stocking a reasonable amount of food for each household would be beneficial and that the government would inform the public on this matter.
