Do You Want to Borrow 5 Pounds from Your Friend?

A recent study revealed young people's attitudes towards borrowing money from friends. In particular, how financial relationships among friends are managed and the impact of this situation on social dynamics has become a topic of interest. Most people exhibit different approaches when it comes to asking for repayment of these debts while sharing expenses at the dinner table or during a joint event.

For example, 21-year-old Henry Payne from New York states that he will only remind for an $8.50 debt once and thinks that asking more is "crazy." On the other hand, 19-year-old Kaz Jahanbini expresses that asking for a loan is a disappointment for him. Kaz mentions that he wants to pay immediately when something is bought for a friend, but he wonders why the other party is delaying.

Many young people are aware that asking for a loan can strain social relationships. According to recent studies, 76% of Gen Z individuals express that they do not receive full repayment from those they lent money to during group expenses. This situation can lead to tension in friendships. On the other hand, British student Betsie Brooke-Taylor has a different cultural perspective on this; she argues that every amount is important and that American culture is more generous.

Experts indicate that asking for a loan can be uncomfortable and that many people feel uneasy about it. Particularly, the British can be more reserved when it comes to asking for loans. Money expert Laura Pomfret emphasizes that individuals should ask for repayments without evaluating the loan amount as small or large. According to her, if a friend consistently fails to repay their debts, it serves as a reminder to be cautious with your next spending on that person.

Money remains a sensitive topic for many in social dynamics. While asking for a loan among friends can sometimes strain relationships, it is considered a normal situation for some. Ultimately, how borrowing is managed varies based on individuals' social relationships and personal attitudes.
